Donation Coordinator / Recovery Coordinator - On Call

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is seeking

On Call Donation Coordinator / Recovery Coordinator - Tissue Donation

to provide support for the Tissue Services department

at our Laredo location.


CLOSING DATE: September 7, 2010
Job Summary: 

Participate in the collection of the cadaveric surgical bone removal.  Participate in educational community programs with local groups to promote cadaveric and non-cadaveric tissue donation.  Participate in all aspects of the cadaveric tissue surgical recovery.


Responsibilities / Expectations for the Donation Coordinator / Recovery Coordinator - Tissue Donation include:  
  • Perform medical history evaluation on every potential surgical bone donor, and determine tissue donation suitability.
  • Evaluate and independently make a judgment decision regarding donor suitability based on physical examination, medical record review and next of kin interview.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all medical personnel.
  • Assist on providing educational in service to all participating hospital in cadaveric tissue donation.
  • Assist in the development of educational material for surgical bone and cadaveric tissue donation.
  • Screen and coordinate potential surgical and cadaveric tissue donors according to STBTC guidelines. 
  • Evaluate cadaveric tissue donor medical history and make appropriate judgment based on STBTC guidelines.
  • Provide family support and instructions when needed.  Obtain tissue donation consent and participate in donor tissue procurement as specified in STBTC procedure manual.
  • Responsible, when on-call, for the coordination and supervision of the procurement team during the tissue recovery.
  • Document the performance of each step in the tissue procurement.
  • Assist in maintaining all procurement supplies and equipment and ensure an adequate supply.
  • Assist in the training of surgical procedures for the aseptic recovery of tissue to new procurement personnel.
  • Represent STBTC as needed.
  • Successfully complete coordinating training program.
  • May perform other tasks as assigned.

    • Schedule: 7days/week 24 hours on call

    Job Requirements
    Requirements for the Donation Coordinator / Recovery Coordinator - Tissue Donation include:

      Education / Qualifications:
      • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in health science , communications and/or related discipline preferred

      Knowledge / Experience:
      • One year experience in operating room and/or aseptic technical procedures preferred
      • Background in staff training and education helpful
      • Must be at least 21 years old with good driving record
      • Three years driving experience required

      Licensure / Certifications:

      • Texas Licensed Nurse, ASCP Certification or equivalent, or Certified Tissue Bank Specialist preferred

      • Texas Driver’s License
